About the Founder
My name is Heyon Choi, and I am a senior currently attending Phillips Academy Andover. Since childhood, I have been guided by two passions - art and supporting chilldren on the autism spectrum. As an American with Korean upbringing and ethnic background, I advocate for Asian, Asian-American and other minority artists on the spectrum.
Over the past nine years, I have served as both a community volunteer and an aspiring art director, supporting children and artists on the autism spectrum. My aim is to promote their exceptional talents, and I have established a broad network within the Korean and Korean-American autism artist communities. A cornerstone of my work involves collaborating with artists on the autism spectrum and curating group exhibitions to showcase the artists and their art to the world, engaging and educating neurotypical audiences.
I kicked off 2024 with a group exhibition at the Cambridge Public Library in Massachusetts in commemoration of MLK Day. The event included artworks by a dozen artists exploring Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy and advocacy for equality and justice, along with a lecture and interactive audience participation program.
Over the summer, I curated a series of exhibitions in Union City, NJ, Washington, D.C., and Cambridge, MA, centered around the theme of Freedom, Liberty, & Independence. Delivered in conjunction with the U.S. Independence Day in July and the Korean Independence Day on August 15, these exhibitions resonated across cultures, highlighting autistic artists’ interpretations of freedom that transcend national boundaries.
In September, I was invited by Professor Lawrence Fung of the Stanford University School of Medicine to direct and present a virtual autistic art exhibition at the 2024 Stanford Neurodiversity Summit. My most recent exhibition, in celebration of World Animal Day on October 4, explores the unique connection many autistic artists have with animals, plants, and nature.
I am currently working on a documentary film aimed at shedding light on the artistic worlds and lives of autistic artists. I look forward to sharing updates as my journey unfolds!
