Celebrating MLK Day
Freeom - Martin Luther King, Jr.
24” W x 18” H | Oil pastel, alcohol marker | 2023
“Freedom - Martin Luther King, Jr.” is the artist’s contribution to the collection in celebration of 2024 MLK Day. He wrote MLK's name in mirror mode and included various representations of MLK, such as his age, relevant geographies, the expression “I Have a Dream,” freedom, and peace in multiple languages.
The artist used oil pastels to create the colorful and dynamic background, overlaying a variety of numbers, letters, shapes, and images to symbolize peace and harmony in a diverse world.
I Have a Dream
20” W x 16” H | Oil pastel, alcohol marker | 2023
“I Have a Dream” is another contribution to this collection by Brian Park for the celebration of MLK Day. Peace, Dream, Name, and “I Have a Dream” - words and phrases that symbolize MLK’s values and vision - are written in mirror mode. Slivers of light symbolizing hope emerge from the dark, acrylic background. MLK is depicted with oversized ears and in different colors to convey the message that we must all listen carefully to different perspectives. The heart on the chest represents freedom and equality achieved through love.
