Celebrating MLK Day
Perfect Harmony
21” W x 16” H | Acrylic and oil pastel on canvas | 2023
"Perfect Harmony" is Jasmine Yang's artistic contribution to the MLK Day celebrations. This painting honors Martin Luther King Jr., a pivotal leader who championed a non-violent movement for the civil rights of African Americans. King famously dreamed of a society where individuals would be judged by their character rather than the color of their skin.
The background of the painting features the sheet music for "Ebony and Ivory," a song written and composed by Paul McCartney. The lyrics ponder why the black and white keys on a piano can harmonize to produce beautiful music, while people often struggle to achieve similar harmony. This juxtaposition serves as a reminder of the frequent, misguided equating of 'different' with 'wrong,' leading to discrimination based on such differences.
Jasmine's artwork draws parallels between musical compositions and visual art: each note or rest in a song, like each color or shape in a painting, holds unique significance. She asserts that every person is distinct and valuable, akin to individual musical notes or artistic elements. Through this painting, Jasmine advocates for respect and appreciation of our individual differences, encouraging us to learn from each other and embrace our unique identities.

Plaza of Liberty
53cm W x 41cm H | Watercolor on paper | 2024
Artist's description of the artwork
Freedom is a state without restraint. It means being able to think and choose anything, expressing oneself freely, and feeling safe while pursuing what one desires. Freedom feels like a plaza, a spacious area where one can meet anyone yet leave anytime, a relaxed space. I hope to have enough inner space to accept everyone and still have ample room for myself. Dreaming of a life with a rhythm like music, both exhilarating and not confusing, I painted this picture.
