Celebrating MLK Day
Thinking
24” W x 29” H | Acrylic on canvas | 2023
"Thinking" is Sungje's thoughtful contribution to the MLK Day collection. The vibrant colors in the background symbolize the racial and ethnic diversity of people, while the robots are depicted as being ready to rally behind Martin Luther King Jr. in support of his causes. In this scene, MLK is delivering the powerful message, "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that."
MLK listened to many people and sacrificed himself for equality and peace, a commitment reflected in the hearts within the American flag, symbolizing his deep love for humanity. The artwork not only highlights MLK's powerful legacy but also captures the spirit of unity and support that Sungje's robots represent.
I Have a Dream
18" W x 21" H | Acrylic on canvas | 2023
"I Have a Dream" is Sungje's second contribution to this collection in celebration of MLK Day. The broad, horizontal stripes painted in facial colors represent the American flag. Inspired by MLK’s famous "I Have a Dream" speech during the 1963 march in Washington, the artist depicted the people alongside his robots. The robots, of various colors, are holding hands and marching peacefully. MLK lived out his love through his actions, and the pretty hearts around him symbolize the love and appreciation people have for him.

Waving the Stars and Stripes with gusto, they partake in a jubilant festival of freedom. Prominent in the front row is a suave cowboy robot, while another bot eagerly partakes in a hot dog eating contest. A robot adorned as Uncle Sam invites you to join in today's festivities. The backdrop is a vibrant scene depicting numerous robot companions, each uniquely contributing to the joyous celebration.
