Celebrating MLK Day
The Prayer of Martin Luther King
18” W x 21” H | Acrylic on canvas | 2023
"The Prayer of Martin Luther King" is the artist’s contribution to this collection for MLK Day. The canvas is divided into four sections in the shape of a cross. Each section features colors and shapes that symbolize hope for equality and harmony in racial diversity within the United States. The artist used taping as a technique to separate the sections and took care to accurately represent the number of stars and stripes on the American flag. The colors beyond those of the American flag signify the racial diversity in America.
Martin Luther King's Speech
24” W x 24” H | Acrylic on canvas | 2023
"Martin Luther King's Speech" is another contribution to this collection by Yi-Jeong Rim for MLK Day.
The artist began the composition from the four corners and worked toward the center, creating fan-shaped planes and a star-shaped plane at the center in the process. The overall composition evokes reverberating messages coming from a loudspeaker, symbolizing MLK’s inspiring speeches that have touched so many people. Finally, the artist used colors that he felt best represented Black Americans.
Celebrating Independence Day
From Independence to Freedom, and onto Democracy
53" W x 53" H | Acrylic on canvas | 2024
Despite being devastated by Russia's invasion, losing family and friends, Ukrainians gather to save their country and their families even in the darkness. In their resilience, we see the light of hope, wishing for freedom, peace, and an end to the war.
