Autistic Pride Day
An Exhibit Celebrating Distinguished Autistic Artists
About the Exhibition and the Director
Since the release of the movie Rain Man, autism has become more recognized, but progress in neurodiversity has lagged behind other areas of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Heyon Choi, a rising 12th-grade student at Phillips Academy Andover, is determined to change that.
She is the founder of Aconnexion, a platform that connects Asian American and Asian artists on the autism spectrum with the world. Through art exhibitions, lectures, workshops, and social engagement, she advocates for autistic artists and raises public awareness of neurodiversity.
From June 8 to June 18, Heyon held an exhibition at the William V. Musto Cultural Center in New Jersey, at the invitation of Union City Mayor Brian P. Stack and the Board of Comissioners. The event celebrated Autistic Pride Day and honor Korean-American and Korean autistic artists. The exhibition highlighted the raw, instinctive, and innovative expressions of autistic artists with a message to embrace and celebrate neurodiversity.
